Mariah Block

When were you in HOSA?

I joined HOSA as a sophomore in 2016 and was involved through my senior year in 2019.

Did you hold a State Officer position?

Yes! I was the State Treasurer from 2018-2019.

What chapter?

Northeast Technical High School (Watertown, SD)

Where do you go to college?

University of South Dakota

What is your major?

Medical Biology with minors in Interdisciplinary Sciences and Health Service Administration.

What advice would you give HS students in HOSA today?

Even if you don't feel ready or qualified for something, do it anyway! Take a chance on something (an event, a position in your local chapter or at the state level) that makes you nervous. The act of expanding your comfort zone will help you gain the confidence to achieve your future goals.

How did HOSA help you get to where you are today?

HOSA showed me all the opportunities available in the medical field. Competing in multiple events allowed me to "try out" professions before investing years of training and then discovering whether I enjoy the profession or not. Of course, it also built my confidence to pursue a degree and career that is challenging!

Future plans?

I will be taking the MCAT and applying to Medical School within the next year. My goal is to become a pediatrician or family physician for a rural community!
