HOSA State Officers engage in South Dakota Legislative CTSO Shadow Days

This past week, five of the six state officers had the privilege of partaking in the 2020 CTSO Legislative Shadow day.  Between these two days, the students met many other state leaders from various organizations, as well as some of South Dakota’s most authoritative and amicable government officials. The students' learning included effective communication, strong leadership, and strategies of Government.

The first day consisted of social gatherings, both with other students and adults. We arrived at Pierre, where we were introduced to what we would be doing for the next day and a half, as well as all the other organizations that would be joining us. We listened to a couple government pages as they explained the page process and duites.  Immediately following, we entered the Capitol. Our officer team broke up with two going to the House of Representatives meeting while the other three attended a Senator meeting. Both of these sessions gave the students an insight of what each section of the Government does, even though they were later told that it was a rather  “boring day.” Later that night, at the Ramkota, all the officers from the other organizations conjoined for a educational meeting which concluded with a welcoming fro the new Secretary of Education, Dr. Ben Jones. Following this session, The CTSO students hosted the legislators in a dessert social. The experience to visit and give our HOSAA story was very educational and fun for everyone.

On the second day, the officers were assigned a legislator which they shadowed for the morning. These legislators gave students tours of the capitals, allowed them to sit in on important meetings, and observe how South Dakota’s government system works first hand. It was extremely beneficial to talk and interact with such established leaders of our state. Every student present learned a lot that they will carry over to their everyday lives.

The 2020 CTSO day was definitely a success, and we hope to continue to participate in the future!
